The Zambezi Experience was one of this years' main highlights. A tale of 5 nations coming together to share the gift of music. Many thanks to the Switzerland Embassy in Zimbabwe together with the Alliance Francaise Harare/Lusaka, French Embabssy and American Embassy who made this collaboration possible. Young and old meet to battle it out to try and claim the title of Omegna's best vocalist.
Formed in 2012, the Zimbo-ita Project is the product of a successful musical collaboration between professional musicians from Zimbabwe and Italy. Their music is an eclectic fusion of Afro Blues, Italian and Zimbabwean rhythms. Max Covini, Matteo Bodini, Blessing Chimanga, Naphtali Chivandikwa and Joseph Chinouriri are the pioneers of the project seeing the birth of many more collaborations.
In its existence the project travelled around Zimbabwe and Italy doing concerts and workshops in schools which include Watershed College, Harare International School, Kyle college, Carmel School. The project has also been taken to restaurants, theatres and festivals which include San vito (Italy), Ameno Blues Festival ( Italy), Perc Festival 2013 ( Italy), Omegna music festival ( Italy), Blues House ( Italy ) Zimbabwe Carnival (Zim), Italian National day 2013 (Zim), Celebrate the Child charity festival 2012 (Zim), Music world festival (Zim), Mahogany room jazz cafe (South Africa), Misty Jazz place ( Zambia), HIFA (Zim).
The project has had the priviledge of having to perform alongside some of the greatest artist inclidung the late Dr Oliver Mtukudzi (Zim), Amanda labanda( Italy), Dudu Manhenga (Zim), Alberto Fortis ( Italy), Tariro Negitare and Tehn Diamond ( Zim), Academia Music School ( Italy) also playing as part of the project Raymond Mup, Andrea Medici, Danielle Delfino, Ronald Mhundwa, Josh Meck, Giancarlo Ellena and Alberto Gallo. In all this we had the honour of receiving the title of best Cultural exchange group by the Italian Embassy in 2013. As a project, a live demo was recorded in June 2013 and was released in November 2013. This was a well received album with one of their songs 'We are Family' getting airplay around Italy.
After a successful run with what is now known as Zimbo-ita 1 featuring Blessing Chimanga, the project went on to host Othnell Mangoma with his solid act named Music According to Percussion (MAP). This second round (Zimboita 2) presented a sterling performance at HIFA and went on to perform at various functions around Zimbabwe. Zimboita project is known for presenting powerful and energetic collaborations and performances bringing different sounds and cultures together using the power of music.
